The Hope Starts Here Initiative is our commitment to ending the injustice of detaining mothers in hospitals over unpaid medical bills. Every mother deserves dignity, freedom, and the chance to care for her newborn without fear of debt because when a mother is free, her child’s safe beginning is secured.
Why It Matters
Every year, mothers in Ghana are detained in hospitals because they cannot pay their medical bills. This injustice not only robs women of their dignity but also threatens the wellbeing of their newborns. Hope Starts Here exists to break this cycle, ensuring no mother is left behind and every child has the chance to begin life in love, not in detention
Our Approach
Phase 1: Immediate Relief
- Pay off hospital bills to release detained mothers.
- Provide postpartum care, nutrition, and baby essentials.
Phase 2: Pathways to Independence
- Offer skills training and income-generating opportunities for released mothers.
- Connect families with ongoing social and health support.
Phase 3: Systemic Change
- Establish a maternal medical fund to prevent future detentions.
- Advocate for policy reforms that protect mothers from hospital detention over debt.
